WhatsApp Business pricing changes on 1 October 2026: what small businesses need to know

If you run customer conversations on the WhatsApp Business Platform, one date matters this year: 1 October 2026. From that day, Meta begins charging for service messages — the free-form replies you send to customers inside the 24-hour service window. Those replies have been free since November 2024, so for many small businesses this is the first time everyday WhatsApp support will carry a per-message cost.
The change is real, it is documented by Meta, and it is straightforward to prepare for. Here is what actually changes, what stays free, and the two things worth doing before the deadline.
What becomes chargeable
Two message types that are free today start costing money on 1 October 2026:
- Service messages — the free-form replies you send within the 24-hour window after a customer messages you. Free since November 2024, chargeable from October 2026.
- Utility templates sent inside the 24-hour window — order updates, appointment reminders and similar, when sent as a reply inside an open service conversation. Free since July 2025, chargeable from October 2026.
Rates for service messages match Meta's existing utility and authentication rates and vary by market. Unlike utility and authentication, service messages have no volume discount.
What stays free
It is not a blanket charge. Several things do not change:
- The first 1,000 service messages each month, per phone number, are free. You only pay from the 1,001st. The allowance resets monthly and does not roll over.
- Incoming messages are always free — you are never charged to receive what a customer sends you.
- Marketing and authentication message pricing is unchanged.
For a small business answering a few dozen customers a day, 1,000 free service messages a month is a meaningful cushion — many will stay inside it and pay nothing extra.
The deadline that is easy to miss
Meta requires a valid payment method on file by 30 September 2026. If your WhatsApp Business account has no payment method when the change lands, Meta will stop delivering your service messages from 1 October 2026 — meaning your replies inside the 24-hour window simply will not reach customers. This is the one item that can quietly break your support, so check it first.
Two things to do before October
- Confirm a payment method is on your WhatsApp Business account. This is the difference between "a small new cost" and "replies stop working."
- Look at how many service replies you send a month. Under 1,000 per number and you likely pay nothing new. Well over it, and it is worth batching updates into scheduled utility templates and steering routine questions into automated flows, so a human reply is not spent on every message.
How this fits with Chatydesk
Chatydesk runs on Meta's official WhatsApp Business Cloud API, so these are Meta's charges billed at Meta's rates — Chatydesk does not add a markup on messages and takes 0% of your customer payments. What the platform does do is help you stay inside the free allowance: automated flows and quick replies handle routine questions without burning a service message on each one, and scheduled utility templates keep updates predictable. Your monthly Chatydesk subscription is unchanged by the Meta pricing update.

Frequently asked questions
What changes in WhatsApp Business pricing on 1 October 2026?
From 1 October 2026, Meta starts charging for service messages — the free-form replies your business sends inside the 24-hour customer service window. These have been free since November 2024. Utility templates sent inside that same window, free since July 2025, also become chargeable. Marketing and authentication messages are unchanged.
Does my business still get any free WhatsApp messages?
Yes. Every WhatsApp business phone number gets 1,000 free service messages per month. You only pay from the 1,001st service message. The allowance resets each month and does not roll over, and it applies to service messages only — not to utility templates.
What happens if I do not have a payment method on file?
Meta requires a valid payment method on your WhatsApp Business account by 30 September 2026. If none is on file, Meta will stop delivering your service messages from 1 October 2026, so replies to customers inside the 24-hour window will not go through.
Which WhatsApp messages are still free after October 2026?
The first 1,000 service messages each month per number remain free, and messages a customer sends to you are always free to receive. Only business-sent service messages beyond the monthly allowance, and utility templates inside the service window, become chargeable. Rates match Meta's existing utility and authentication pricing and vary by country.
