WhatsApp coexistence: use the Business App and the API on the same number

Michael Kwame Adjei5 min read

Many small businesses run their customer conversations from the free WhatsApp Business app on a phone. That works until they want a shared inbox, automatic replies, or booking and payments in the chat. The classic answer was: move the number to the API and give up the app. Meta's coexistence removes that trade-off, at least in part.

What is coexistence?

Meta describes the feature as onboarding WhatsApp Business app users to the Cloud API. In practice, one number stays active in the Business app and is also connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform. Messages sent and received on either side are mirrored to the other. Meta notes that in its documentation and partner channels this is commonly called "coexistence".

If you are still deciding between the app and the API, start with WhatsApp Business App vs API: which does your business actually need?. Our WhatsApp Business API overview covers the basics.

Who is it for?

Coexistence fits businesses that:

  • already talk to customers from the Business app on their phone every day, such as coaches, consultants, creators and shop owners,
  • do not want to change their number or lose their existing contacts,
  • want to add automation, a shared inbox or integrations without switching everything over at once.

If nobody in your business uses a phone for customer chats, a normal API-only setup is simpler.

What you need (per Meta's documentation)

  • The number is used with the WhatsApp Business app, version 2.24.17 or higher.
  • You connect through a provider's Embedded Signup flow. Providers must be an approved Meta Tech Provider and must handle several webhook events for coexistence.
  • You complete a verification step in the app and can choose whether to share your chat history.

What syncs and what changes

Based on Meta's feature comparison:

Syncs or keeps working

  • 1:1 chats: messages sent and received are mirrored between the Cloud API and the app. Meta says the most recent six months of chat messages can be synchronized, if you allow it.
  • Contacts with a WhatsApp number can be synchronized.
  • Messages you send from the Business app remain free of Cloud API charges; messages sent through the API are billed under Cloud API pricing. See WhatsApp Business pricing changes on 1 October 2026 for how that pricing is changing.

Changes on the app side

  • Broadcast lists are disabled: existing ones become read-only.
  • Disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location are turned off in 1:1 chats.
  • Group chats are not synchronized to the API side.

Rules that still apply

  • The 24-hour customer service window applies to messages sent through the API. Messages sent from the Business app are not subject to it.
  • Numbers used with both the app and the API have a fixed throughput limit, which Meta lists at 20 messages per second, far above what a small business sends.
  • Linked devices: supported companion clients can stay linked, but WhatsApp for Windows and WearOS are not supported. Existing linked devices are unlinked once and can be re-linked afterwards.

How Chatydesk supports it

Chatydesk is a WhatsApp CRM for small European businesses and uses Meta's official Cloud API via Embedded Signup. For coexistence, we can say the following, based on what is built today:

  • Onboarding: when coexistence is switched on, the same "Connect with Facebook" button starts Meta's coexistence flow. Numbers are stored with a dedicated "coexistence" connection type.
  • Phone messages in your inbox: messages you send from the Business app arrive in the Chatydesk inbox as outbound messages, without triggering an automated reply. The code is in place; we have not yet seen these events arrive live from Meta on our own number, so treat it as untested.
  • No double replies: incoming customer messages trigger an automation exactly once. The guard is in the code, but it relies on the same event flow, which we have not yet confirmed live, so do not treat it as proven.
  • History import: the code to import the six-month history is in place. We have not yet confirmed it against live events from Meta, so do not rely on it yet.

Status: tester program. Coexistence is not generally available in Chatydesk. It is switched on per environment. Our booking, payments and automation features work on any connected number, coexistence or not.

Honest caveats

  • It can fail for some numbers. Eligibility depends on the number, region and the state of your Business app account. If Meta's flow does not offer the option or stops mid-way, that is Meta's decision and outside the provider's control.
  • The app must stay in use. In our testing notes we keep the guideline that the Business app should be opened regularly, roughly every two weeks, or mirroring can go quiet. Treat this as our operating experience rather than a published Meta rule.
  • Mirroring depends on live webhooks. If Meta stops delivering events for a number, the phone app keeps working while your inbox stops updating. Chatydesk shows the time of the last received message so this is noticeable.
  • You can disconnect. Meta lets you disconnect the Business Platform from within the app. Registering the number in the consumer WhatsApp app instead will also end the connection.

Should you use it?

If you live in the Business app today and want to add automation without changing your number, coexistence is worth trying, ideally with a test number first. If you want a stable setup today, a dedicated API-only number is the safer choice. Either way, the numbers-and-rules details are in WhatsApp Business API: what it is and who really needs it.

Frequently asked questions

What is WhatsApp coexistence?

Coexistence is a Meta feature that lets one phone number stay active in the WhatsApp Business app while also being connected to the WhatsApp Business Platform (Cloud API). Messages sent and received are mirrored between the two, so you can keep answering on your phone while software adds automation and a team inbox.

What do I need to use coexistence?

According to Meta's developer documentation, the number must be in use on the WhatsApp Business app, version 2.24.17 or higher, and you connect it through a provider's Embedded Signup flow. The provider must be an approved Meta Tech Provider. Individual eligibility can still vary by number.

Will my old chats show up in the new inbox?

Meta allows businesses to share up to six months of 1:1 chat history and contacts during onboarding, if you choose to share it. Group chats are not synchronized. In Chatydesk, importing this history is implemented but not yet confirmed against a live event, so treat it as a tester-stage feature.

What do I lose in the Business app after connecting?

Per Meta, broadcast lists become read-only, and disappearing messages, view-once messages and live location are turned off in 1:1 chats. Group chats are not synced to the API side. Voice and video calls, catalog and other business tools stay in the app.

Is Chatydesk's coexistence support generally available?

Not yet. Coexistence onboarding in Chatydesk is currently in a tester program and switched on per environment. It works through Meta's official Embedded Signup, but we would rather tell you it is in testing than oversell it.
